Un hérisson dans mon jardin
A hedgehog in my garden
English version below the picture

A hedgehog in my garden.
Two days ago, Janine was walking down the garden paths trying to see if the seeds we had planted were germinating. After the long drought and despite of some recent wet days nothing was out from the earth excepted some scarce plants . . I have to say those recent rains were accompanied by low temperatures.
Suddenly Janine’s eyes met a kind of bristly bowl. It was a hedgehog. And this kind animal was looking at Janine with her small, lively eyes. It was charming
This meet made Janine pleased and she continued happily on her way in the peace of garden.
When she came back she met again the hedgehog but this time it was half sleeping and its head was half hiden into the bowl of bristles. Janine understood the hedgehog needed a rest before to chase and eat the slugs and snails ready to devoure our young plants or lettuces !! So she took a photo with her cell phone of this friendly animal .
Who does not love a hedgehog ? so humble, with its pretty head covered with red hair and its sparkling eyes?
she or he is so cute…
I think so, Tribo !
What a great discovery! Cute hedgehog🦔 napping before devouring your young plants and veggies-lol
Isla said she thinks they only eat bugs, not plants and veggies. Well I’m gonna look it up and I’ll tell you.
Isla is right . The hedgehog eats only slugs or snails but no plants ! Bravo Isla !
Aw! What a cutie! They do have such sweet faces! 🙂
I hope he/she will continue to be a good helper in the garden! 🙂
Thank you for sharing the photo! It is a smile-bringer! 🙂
HUGS!!! for you and Janine! Waves for the hedgehog! 😛
Wa are happy to have this cute hedgehog in our veggie garden, Carolyn. It will make a good work . He is sweet and efficient! 🙂
A lovely find for Janine. I’ve never personally met a hedgehog but think they are so cute and sweet! I didn’t know they are gardeners . I’m so glad she caught this one with her camera and that you shared it ! It makes me smile. Love ❤️
a simple hedgehog brings warmth in our hearts and protects the garden., Holly. ❤
Plus , they are so cute ❤
They are harmless except for slugs and bugs
I haven’t seen a hedge hog around here. We could use one!
According the comment below the yours ,Holly , the hedgehogs are small in the US and used like pet .
I think that’s right. They can be purchased in the pet shop. I’m sure they are spoiled but like all creatures prefer freedom.
Wild is better, you are right Holly!
I’m saddened by caged animals.
Yes it is sad.
I don’t think we have any wild hedgehogs here – only the pet shop variety that don’t get very big. The biggest one I’ve seen was the size of a grapefruit! Wonderful that you have a helper in the garden!!
You teach me , Val . I did not know the hedgehogs were small and used like pets in the US. Here they are wild and useful for the gardens.
That would be a new one at our place. We have frogs all the time in the warmth and unfourantly snakes. Rabbits, squirrels, and birds year around. Some occasional visitors are turtles, skunks, raccoons, deer, coyotes, and opossum.
you have a lot of wild animals at your place . Nature still is present around you .
And we live on the edge of town
like us but recently a lot of buildings have taken the place of the wild !
There is no where to build next to us really
Good for you both
We are trying to find a place out in the country but that is put on hold for a couple of years
2 of my grand-daughters have a pet hedgehog. I don’t remember what they named it. It’s very small.
This is new for me . I did not imagine, Gracia , a hedgehog like a pet . But as you say they are small in America.
Oh wow – I’ve never seen one up close before. At first I thought they would be harmful to the garden but it’s good to know that they eat slug and snails. When my mom had a vegetable garden, she would always get so angry at the slugs.
Yes and knowing this we have not to throw in the vegetable garden products to kill the slugs and snails because we kill in the same time the hedgehog that eat those poisonous slugs
Maybe you could start a hedgehog garden. 🙂
I hope this one will remain in my vegetable garden, Keith.
You and Janine have a wonderful respect for all of Creation and are working hand and hand with God to care for our earth….God bless you and your family.
Thank you, Françoise , we are doing what we can , for the best .
I have a friend in England that looks after the hedgehogs in her garden and has even rescued one I know of.
We don’t have that critter here.
British people often friends of wild nature
What a fun thing to find in your garden !! I know the two of you enjoyed see him !!!
And I am glad to read you, Maggie. Please tell me where I can join you ?( ( Facebook with what name? )
I don’t think that I’ve ever met a hedgehog in real life. He looks so cute! This was a very informative blog. I wonder if a hedgehog would make a good pet?
I don’ t think Caroline this wild hedgehog could become a pet.
This is the first time I have seen a hedgehog this close. We don’t have them here. At least I have never seen one. There is a book written by Muriel Barbery , titled The Elegance of the Hedgehog. It was on the best seller list in France. The original title is L’Élégance du hérisson I loved that book, which was translated in English by the writer. Not sure if you have read it. Just thought of it when I read your post.
Love,
Zakiah.
That is one of my favorite novels of all time and I immediately was reminded of it with this post. I’m glad you thought of it too.
Thank you Judy. It really and truly was one of my favorite reads. Loved it.
In my garden I would prefer to find a gopher snake. I’m not bothered by snails and slugs but the gophers are wreaking havoc. I have to admit though, a hedgehog is much cuter than a snake.
You have an interesting fauna in your area of America , Judy
Very charming story and photo! It’s good to know that the hedgehog plays a useful role in the garden by eating the slugs and snails! A great helper to you!
A hedgehog is definitely a charming neighbor to have. I’m surprised it seems so tame. Domesticated ones can be gotten as pets here, but they aren’t quite as lovable as they look and have special needs, which can lead to difficulties (and abandonment). I think they lose the ability to hibernate, but incompletely—their bodies still try to shut down in cold, which can injure or kill them. Much better to have a wild one living nearby!
The hedgehogs when a man is coming near them put their head in and offer only a bowl .of bristle and stop on the place.. They are shy .

Oh, what a treat! Janine was fortunate to have been able to take a picture. I touched one once. I was very surprised at the texture. I was not expecting the roughness to do cute an animal. But, of course, it is God’s way of protection.
Michel, we finally have spring! The grass, leaves, and early flowers are showing. We can breathe a sigh of relief!
Sending you much love! 🌷
The hedgehogs are harmless, Rachel . Yes spring brings the green but at this time it is cold ! ❤
Oh I’ve never seen one in the wild! What a treat 😀
I hope he helps to keep your garden healthy 🙂
Yes it is a cleaner of the garden, Marlaine . ❤
That hedgehog is awesome! We have them in cages here. 🙂
In your area , Miriam, you have much more impressive animals ! 🙂
How wonderful! To find a wild thing living in the garden that DOESN’t devour the plants is very special. We don’t have them here, but I think they are very cute from the pictures and videos I have seen. A few years ago, we had a turtle friend that lingered in our yard for several days. It made me feel special that we were chosen! I hope your charming little visitor decides to grace you for a while,
I hope sincerely it will remain in our garden, Susan! ❤
I’ve never seen a hedgehog in real life! What a lovely encounter Janine had. I’m so glad she took a photo of this dear little creature for all of us to see. 🙂
Wild hedgehogs are common here Marion but often active at night. .
how adorable!!! Has he moved into your garden for good Michel? I imagine you and Janine are happy he is there if he eats the bugs and snails,,,,he will be a good helper!!!
It is a wild animal, Gayle and it goes where the freedom calls it
Oh, how sweet! I bet the hedgehog is excitedly telling all his friends about meeting you and Janine. Thank you for sharing this picture. I wish we had hedgehogs here.
Love,
Julie
I donrt know if the hedgehog will be telling all his friends about us , Julie , but he was very friendly . 🙂
The wonder of all God’s creation are in the garden. Love to you and Janine ❤
tthe
You are right Nancy we always are amazed in front of the beauty of God’s Creation. ❤
The little hedgehog will surely be a helper in your garden keeping pesky snails and slugs away. Enjoy watching what he does. Love ❤ Marilyn
Yes ,Marilyn the hedgehog will be a precious helper and I hope it stays in my garden.
They look so cute, and have heard of people having them as pets. Here in Wisconsin, a person has to get a special permit to have one as a pet. I never realized they are not naturally found in the U.S. I learned something new in my old age!!
No old age , Nancy : you both are radiant
In France the hedge hogs are only wild ( no pets ) ❤
What a delightful photograph of the hedgehog , what a surprise for Janine , you are right about the weather we still have to have the heating for a few hours at night as its still that cold here.
Janine got the good reflex to picture it.
You are right Julie it is cold and indeed at the end of the evening we light the fireplace..
They are very interesting animals. Some people keep them as pets. I have never seen one, but the pictures I have seen are very cute!
Thank you for your four comments , Nancy . I appreciate them. ❤
How adorable! Love that photo, Michel! Love to you and Janine. ❤️
Thank you, Linda.
Yes, hedgehogs are rather cute creatures. Glad Janine encountered one and took a photo of it!
The weather here has been extremely hot too, so when it rains we are all refreshed.
I wonder if there are hedgehogs in Singapore, Suzy?
I don’t know, I’ve never seen one in real life before! Only seen them on TV and in photographs.☺️
In Asia perhaps there are others species of hedgehogs , Suzy.
Perhaps 🙂
What a cute story, Uncle Michel😄! Is the hedgehog still around your garden?😅
No , we did not see it again, Isabel. Hedgehog is an discrete animal and it is principally active at night.
Vive la nature !
Amitiés,
AM
Regarder mais pas toucher, Anne-Marie : 🙂
Awww this made me smile. The hedgehog is so cute.
a modest and shy animal may bring smile, Elizabeth
I’ve never seen a hedgehog. What a nice thing to encounter in the garden.
The meet always is surprising and captivating, Gail.
He’s very cute, Michel! 🙂 Hope all is well! Cheers!!
Thanks , Larry . Yes this hedgehog is attractive ! 🙂
Like the folks above have said, that hedgehog is soooooooo CUTE!
Bonjour toi, mon Ami MICHEL

I wonder if your ornamentals are coming in. I remember that you had some nice hollyhocks. Now I see in gardens and landscaping some of my favorites making their appearance again—bluebells and mullein, also some red columbine and Solomon’s seal.
At this time Red Colombine are in bloom and so for Solomo’s seal. The hollyhocks are growing !
What a sweet little hedgehog, Michel and Janine! ❤
So cute! I have never met one. I don’t know if they live in Canada.
Alas some days later we found it dead in our lawn . Si sad
I love that grandma Janine finds it charming. Good phone camera too!
