Lundi dernier, 8 janvier, j’ai subi une petite chirurgie assez délicate à l’avant-bras droit pour réaliser une fistule artério-veineuse (connexion entre une petite artère et une petite veine) pour permettre la dialyse début février ou début mars. Cette dialyse est nécessaire car mes reins ne fonctionnent plus suffisamment.
Je ne souffre pas du tout mais je dois pendre des précautions pour protéger cette fragile fistule . Une infirmière vient deux fois par jours pendant 6 jours pour des injections d’anticoagulant et renouveler le pansement.
Last Monday January 8th I got a small but delicate surgery at my right forearm to make an arterioveinous fistula ( connection between and a small artery and a small vein ) to allow a dialysis to start at the end of February or beginning of March. This dialysis is needed because my kidneys do not work much anymore
I do not suffer at all but I must take precautions to protect this fragile fistula. A nurse comes twice a day during 6 days for anticoagulant injections and renew the plaster.

Oh goodness Michel, I am sorry to hear this news. I had a good friend whose husband went for regular dialysis. It is not what I would wish for you. I love your positive attitude regarding this development in your life. My friend’s husband was always the same way. I have since several years, lost touch with the friend, when I moved to my new location. My prayers are with you as you begin these treatments. ❤ Lynn

I am praying for you. John has been in dialysis over 2 years now and it is saving his life. He goes 3 times per week but early in the morning. He get home early and will nap somewhat during the day. We can’t get by without good kidney function….He is too old for a transplant.
I have a dear friend who is much younger and her kidneys have failed. She applied for a transplant and was approved. A lot of people had been praying.
John will be going Friday for a vein procedure….It will happen every so often when you are in dialysis. I do pray for success.
You will be alright. I’m so glad for the chance to be a part of life again.

I often wonder if my older sister had better care instead of just hearing her kidney’s were only functioning at 40% from her diabetes if she would still be with us. The disadvantages of growing up and living in a smaller community with fewer doctors I guess. I need to take note as I also am diabetic and I don’t drink enough water.

Sorry to hear that the kidneys don’t work well and now you have to use dialysises, but so grateful that is a choice. Seems the older we get, the less our body wants to stay healthy. I think of you often. John and I dealing with junk too. His is melanoma again. Next month he has the Mohs treatment of one of the melanomas. I will always have nerve pain with both knees. And now my diabetes is high again. But We both push forward everyday and enjoy what is before us. Other than you surgery, hope all is well with you and Janine. You two are such an inspiration to me. Wow, that kind of sucks! The good news is that you are merely inconvenienced, not incapacitated. You have always been one who makes the best of the life you’ve been given, so I have no doubt that this will not diminish your love of family and gardening (though you may need a little more help from the kids). Good luck with the treatment. Has your doctor recommended any diet changes? I’ve been reading about the concerns some researchers have regarding sugar consumption and animal proteins. I suspect your diet is already rich in plant based, whole-grained foods, thanks to your garden so you probably already have the best diet possible.

Oh, my—that sounds like cause for concern. My thoughts are with you. It sounds like a matter for which there should be much familiarity and expertise at hand, though. And it’s good to hear that there’s nothing to endure so far besides an enforced convalescence!

I’ve been on dialysis (initially through catheter in my chest) since January 2016, and have had a functioning dialysis fistula since June 2016. I can assure the people without experience with dialysis that the procedure is relatively painless, though it does consume lots of time three times a week, involves some adjustment in eating habits, prescriptions to deal with vitamin loss and other concerns, and fatigue on dialysis days that mean the patient oftentimes will end up taking a nap afterwards.
Star fruit is the only food dialysis patients can’t eat for the simple fact a poison in the fruit that functioning kidneys remove from the body stay in the body and kill a person with end term kidney failure! (I personally never thought he fruit tasted that good anyway, so I don’t miss it!)

I’m sorry you have to join me on dialysis, Michel, but, if your experience is like mine, the worst part is the time involved and occasional “tune-ups” to improve the flow volume of blood. (I had one angioplasty procedure on the fistula in the year and a half +/- I’ve had it.) I have what they call “buttonholes”, something discussed at the end of the first link above. It does simplify accessing the blood supply in the fistula. I’ve never had problems with infection, a problem many people with catheters or fistulas have. For the most part, normal good hygiene practices assure you won’t have infections.
Though most of my fellow dialysis patients are there because of diabetes, I come to stage five end term kidney failure because of a form of vasculitis called Wegener’s granulomatosis or GPA. Like you, I am well aware of the benefit of a positive attitude!
My guess is that French dialysis centers are not that different from American dialysis centers in that you will have regular (minimum of monthly) visits by a doctor, dietitian, perhaps even a social worker or psychologist to keep you “tuned in” to how you are doing as far as several concerns they measure by blood tests for the first two, and your emotional needs for the latter two. (I always just have a pleasant chat about my cats, Andy and Dougy, with the social worker since I have a good attitude about dialysis and have no adjustment problems.)

Don’t hesitate to ask questions of your dialysis team! Here, they hand out information to the patients about the process, the concerns, the prognosis for the patient, different types of dialysis including ones a patient does at home with a helper (!), and basic dietary needs of someone on dialysis, among many other things. Mornin Glorie! I’m sure you will do well with your dialysis and I’m thankful there is a good solution to your kidney problems and that there is no pain involved. It’s also good that this is January, an old farmer told me once not to work the soil in January or July, I’m not sure why but he always had a successful garden! So don’t worry with planting or tilling, you could however look over seed catalogs, it’s one of my favorite winter activities! I know you will be an excellant patient and follow the nurses and Janines instructions with care. I thank God for your friendship everyday and I will add to that your health and well being! ILYM

How times have changed. It is wonderful that we now have the miracle of dialysis to keep one alive longer. The inconvenience of the time involved will be well worth it, and we will be able to enjoy your presence much longer!!
